TWO Basingstoke teenagers are putting on a live musical extravaganza to support a local pre-school.

Zander West and Megan Ashby are the brains behind next week’s Summer Kick 2016 gig, a fundraiser for Merton Pre-School in Popley.

The 16-year-olds, who met whilst taking part in a National Citizenship Scheme course, are taking over Basingstoke’s new Stage music venue.

Among a host of acts performing are Bristolian indie rockers idleside, Norwich alternative quartet Phase Blue as well as Basingstoke stars Fusiliers and Hologram.

Local solo artists Jemma Tennison and Diana Sankey complete the line-up.
Basingstoke and Deane’s mayor Cllr Jane Frankum will also attend to support the teenagers’ event.

Although Zander, who attends the Vyne Community School, is excited about the prospects of putting on his first gig, he is adamant it’s all about raising money for the school and uniting people.

Zander said: “It’s a charity that my family have heavily supported for such a long time.I knew it was a charity that often supported children who are vulnerable and don’t get the support the children need.

“The money will go towards the landscaping of the garden and give the children a great environment for them to learn in and be outside in.

“We thought by hosting a music event it brings people together and unites them more – so it’s not something you just buy and go away from – it’s about the memories.”

The pair decided to put on a show as they both have aspirations of working the music and entertainment industry and hope to attend Queen Mary’s College, in Basingstoke, after they find out their GCSE results just prior to the gig.

They managed to secure Stage’s venue for the night free of charge and get to grips with booking bands for the gig.

“Both me and Megan are lovers of live music so this is something that we’re both excited about,” Zander said.

He added: “We have worked incredibly hard over the last two weeks and will continue to do so as we approach the event. It has taken a lot of ambition, determination and desire to achieve this event against the odds to pull this off.

“Stage and its manager have given essential support and guidance, giving up vast amounts of time, money and energy to aid the event and to support the community.

“Merton pre-school, who rely heavily on Government funding are so pleased to be seeing this event take shape and to be receiving some much needed support from the community, which they hope to see continue on into the future as they continue to work hard to better the lives of children in this town.”
