A SCOUT group in Hook marked the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War with an event that was financially snubbed by the parish council.

Scores of people attended the event run by the 7th Bramshill (Hook) Scout Group, at its headquarters in Raven Road. Among the attractions were a tug-of-war competition, fairground rides, a Punch and Judy show, balloon-making and face-painting.

Group Scout leader Sue Hedges said: “It was opened by the Old Basing British Legion Corps of Drums, marching up Raven Road and into the grounds, which was a lovely sight. The Scout Group have had some lovely comments from people who attended.”

Members of Hook Parish Council turned down a request for £500 from the group, after some councillors raised concerns about the event’s “inappropriate” tone.

But Shane Hilden, managing director of Smithie LED, an electrical goods business based in Basing-stoke, stumped up the cash.

Tesco, in Hook, and Councillor Jonathan Glen, who represents the village on Hampshire County Council, also supported the event financially.

As well as the financial backers, Mrs Hedges also thanked The Raven Hotel for providing free parking, the corps of drums, Elizabeth Hall and local groups who donated prizes for the tombola.
