TENNIS courts used by an Oakley club have been resurfaced thanks to a £10,000 grant.

The resurfaced courts at Oakley Lawn Tennis Club, in Andover Road, reopened earlier this month.

Councillor Cathy Osselton, Conservative borough Cabinet member for partnerships, attended the opening ceremony and presented a plaque to the club in recognition of the support received from the council, which provided the five-figure grant to pay for the new courts.

The club has been part of the sporting and social life of the village for 90 years. Players range in age from primary school to some who have been active members for 80 years.

Roy Yeoman, from the club, said: “The club is hoping that the new courts will encourage more local people to play tennis and new members and visitors are always welcome.

“The club hosts an annual tournament to raise funds for Barnardo’s and we’re pleased that this was the first event played on the new courts.”
