TRUCK drivers at a Basingstoke depot are proudly showing their support for this year’s Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal.

A total of 79 tractor units and four rigid vehicles at the Sainsbury’s depot in Pelton Road, Houndmills, will feature a large poppy ahead of Remembrance Day.

The supermarket giant, which is currently investing millions of pounds in redeveloping the depot, has backed the Poppy Appeal in this way for a number of years.

Around 1,350 vehicles across the country will be adorned with a large poppy.

Terry Collins, fleet operations manager at Basingstoke, said: “We normally get the poppies on two weeks before Remembrance Sunday, and keep them on until two weeks afterwards.

“Quite a few drivers are quite proud to display their poppies on the front of their vehicles.”

The Royal British Legion aims to raise £40million this year to continue to fund its welfare work for Armed Forces families.

Lapel poppies are available on donation from shops, supermarkets, pubs and clubs from the last week of October until Remembrance Day.

This year’s campaign includes a charity single called No Man’s Land (Green Fields of France), featuring singer Joss Stone and guitar legend Jeff Beck.
