A GROUP of school pupils are heading to the O2 today to take part in a once-in-a-lifetime concert.

The 29 youngsters from Overton Primary School are taking part in the Young Voices concert, where they will join other children from across the country to sing rock, pop and classical songs, accompanied by professional artists.

This is the fourth year the school, in Court Drove, has taken part in the event, organised by the family-run Young Voices, which arranges more than 14 concerts a year in the UK and Ireland, bringing more than 2,500 schools, 90,000 children and 6,000 teachers together to enjoy music and celebrate singing.

Children from Overton Primary School have been practising the songs since September last year, and will travel by coach to the O2 to perform their well-rehearsed numbers.

Mel Stewart, a teacher at the school who will accompany the children along with teacher Amy Parsons, said: “We will sing songs over a huge variety of genres – we are doing Latin and we do a pop medley. Some will be sung individually and others will be with a celebrity artist.”

This year’s professional artists include 2012 X Factor contestant Lucy Spraggan.

Mrs Stewart said: “We build it up for the kids and it’s the thrill of the performance with professional singers and lighting makes it a once-in-a-lifetime experience.”
