HUNDREDS of runners pounded the streets of Hook for the village’s annual running event.

A total of 999 runners took part in the Hook Fun Run and Road Race on Sunday, which raises money for local charities.

Organisers hope this year’s event will raise around £9,000, adding to the £100,000 raised since the event began in 1992.

Caroline Kingwell, member of the organising committee, said: “It was a perfect day for running. The atmosphere was buzzing and everyone was smiling.

“Hook Fun Run and Road Race is a huge community event. Over 100 local people volunteer to marshal.

“Local businesses such as William Grant and Sons and Hook Tandoori provided valuable sponsorship while the Hook Schools Parents Association ran a barbecue.” The runners started and finished the races at the site of Hook infant and junior schools, in Church View. They could enter a variety of distances, including a 10-mile race and a 2.5-mile fun run.

Matthew King and Lesley Locks broke the records for the six-mile race for men and women respectively.

Mr King finished in 32 minutes and four seconds, while Lesley finished in 36 minutes and 30 seconds meaning she holds the record for both distances.

In 2016 the event celebrates its 25th anniversary on May 15.
