BASINGSTOKE children submitted a petition calling for more road safety measures to be added around their school site.
Year 5 pupils Samarth Vadiyampeta and Florence Neller, both 10, submitted a petition on behalf of 250 pupils and parents at Fairfields Primary School, in Council Road, to councillors at Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council at a meeting last Thursday.
The petition calls for a new 20mph speed limit to be implemented in Council Road, a traffic warden to patrol double yellow lines along the road more frequently, a review to be carried out on parking provision along the road and for the council to consider extending the free 30-minute parking scheme at the Top of The Town to allow parents to pick up their children.
Janine Jenkins, deputy headteacher at the school, told The Gazette: “I was unbelievably proud.
They stood in front of 60 councillors and they were so confident and passionate and I welled up with pride.”
The borough council’s head of community services, Tim Boschi, said a meeting will be arranged “to understand the concerns raised”.
