HOLES at a Basingstoke golf course could be given an upgrade if the scheme is given the green light by the borough council.

Weybrook Park Golf Club, in Rooksdown Lane, has applied to Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council for planning permission to reconfigure and realign the front nine holes at the 18-hole course.

An application for the scheme was approved by the borough council in April 2012, but as the works have not been carried out within a three-year time span, the golf course is required to re-apply for permission.

The application follows a scheme to improve the other nine holes at the course.

As part of the scheme, a number of holes will be repositioned, greens reconstructed, the construction of a new practice putting green and a new access point onto the course from the clubhouse and car park will be created.

The application says the current front nine holes were built with an “extremely limited budget” and the holes “fall short of the standards expected by members and visitors for a high-quality golfing venue”.

It says: “WPGC has a long-term vision to provide a highquality golf course equal to the best in Hampshire and has sought to improve and upgrade its facilities over the years.

“As stated, the original 18 holes were constructed to a restricted budget with limited earthworks restricting the size and quality of the greens and variety in tee positions.

“The construction of the new nine holes to much higher quality in terms of layout, materials and finishes highlights the inferior standard of the existing front nine holes.

Accordingly, the golf club has decided to substantially upgrade these holes in order to create a complete 18 hole course of consistent high quality.”

A decision on the application is expected by October 5.
