HELPING to preserve and enhance the historical character of Basingstoke town centre is the driving force behind a new set of planning rules agreed by Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council.

Changes were agreed by the borough council’s decision-making Cabinet to the Basingstoke Town Conservation Area Appraisal at a meeting on September 29, which included identifying what it is about the appearance of the area that should be preserved and providing additional planning controls to protect the character of the area.

The new controls mean that planning permission is now required for minor development to buildings, such as traditional windows and doors, within the conservation area.

By being able to consider applications for minor alterations and extensions, the council will be able to ensure that any development does not adversely affect the area’s special qualities.

Cabinet member for planning and infrastructure, Councillor Mark Ruffell, said: “Basingstoke’s Town Centre has a special character and we want to do everything we can to ensure that one of the town’s most valued historic areas is preserved so that we can safeguard it for the future.”
