THERE was an unusual sight in War Memorial Park on Saturday as residents witnessed a giant inflatable dinosaur running around the park.

The spectacle was part of the fundraising antics of Emily Merrick who came up with the idea of the ‘T-Rex Hates…’ 5km runs as a way to raise money for The Christie Charity, which funds projects and services that lie outside the scope of the NHS, such as pioneering new research projects.

The 32-year-old, who got the nickname T-Rex from the kettle club she attends, has set up a series of different running challenges, which she will complete in the dinosaur suit.

The first event was a 5km run around War Memorial Park with the runners stopping after every kilometre to do five push-ups.

She said: “It was a lot of fun and successful but it was hard work to finish the 5k.

“It was like running in a sauna with a parachute on my back, which didn’t help considering how strong the wind was.

“There were a lot of children in the park taking photos and giving me high-fives and their parents asking what it was all about so hopefully it has raised a bit more awareness of our cause.”

Emily, who was joined by friends and family, completed the run in just under 45 minutes, raising more than £1,000, with the total still growing.
