ON A historic day for the UK, where 52 per cent of the population has voted to leave the EU, Basingstoke and Deane residents have firmly backed a 'Brexit'.

Along with the majority of Hampshire's towns and cities, the borough narrowly voted in favour of leaving the EU.

On what is being called the UK's "independence day" by UKIP leader Nigel Farage with a 78 per turnout across the borough the leave side received 52,071 votes to the remains 48,257.

However, elsewhere Hart District Council bucked the national trend choosing to remain as part of the European Union.

The official turn out in Hart was 82.6 per cent, one of the highest in the country, with 30,282 people voting to remain. The figure to leave in the district was 27,513.

Nationally the  turnout was 71.8 per cent - with more than 30 million people voting - the highest turnout at a UK election since 1992.

And as the Leave campaign celebrates on this historic day in the UK's history the pound fell to its lowest level against the dollar since 1985 as the markets reacted to the result.
