A CHARITY doubles tennis tournament has raised more than £500 for a Basingstoke-based cancer charity.

The Waverley Lawn Tennis Club has raised £590 for the Pink Place Cancer Charity by hosting a ladies tennis doubles charity event on Saturday, September 3.

The invitations for the tournament were circulated to all tennis clubs in Basingstoke and surrounding areas, with teams coming from as far away as Reading, Walton on Thames and Weybridge.

A trustee from the Pink Place opened the event with a few words, after which the ladies commenced play on the grass courts before moving onto the hard courts following a brief downpour.

Prizes for the event were generously sponsored by Marks and Spencer Chineham, Tesco Chineham, Tesco Basingstoke Town Centre, Morrisons Basingstoke, Waitrose Basing View, The Pink Place Cancer Charity, as well as by the ladies who attended the event.

Some of the prizes included prosecco, wine, chocolates, vouchers and spa treatments, with flowers going to the winning ladies.

A member of the Riseley Club in Reading also donated tennis clothing which attendees were able to purchase on the day with all sale proceeds going to the Pink Place.

The tournament raised £295 for the Pink Place, which will be matched by Sun Life Financial of Canada (UK) Brighter Life Community Programme, bringing the total amount raised to £590.

Attendees at the event wished to extend their thanks to Totally Tennis in Basingstoke, the Hampshire Court Hotel and event organisers the Waverley Lawn Tennis Club.

The Pink Place Cancer Charity is a charity that supports women with cancer from their initial diagnosis to up to five years after the end of their treatment.

The charity offers a range services, including complementary therapies, wellbeing sessions and counselling.

In addition, the charity also offers The Blue Space for Men, which offers cancer support and services to men in and around North Hampshire.
