Well over 160 athletes for the Basingstoke & Mid Hants Athletic Club took part in the club's annual track and field championships at Down Grange on Sunday, September 4. 

There were 14 age group categories – under 9s, under 11s, under 13s, under 15s, under 17s, under 20s and senior male and senior female – in action with each doing three events and their performances scored against an AAA table of points.

The best competition of the day came in the under 20 men's category which resulted in a tie with both Arran Topham and Henry Christer scoring an equalling 278 points.

Henry Christer’s best event was the 100m, recording 11.39secs for 99 points while it was the Long Jump for Arran Topham for his best event, jumping going out to 5.92m for 94 points.

The best among girls was Mia Hartgill in the under 15s. Mia's best event being the High Jump where she cleared 1.45m and was consistently a high scorer over all three of her events. Georgia Barrett was the clear winner of the under 13 girls scoring 195 points in the 1200m with a time of 4:9.62. Georgia in the end won by 35 points.

Newcomer to the club Orrin Wheeler was the best in the under 15 boys category. A best in the 800m with a personal best of 2:11.43 set him up with a 93 points score and in the end he won scoring 260, just one point ahead of Charlie Kavanagh, his best event being the 300m run in 49.36 secs which scored 95 points.

In the under 11 girls event Evie Bowditch was the clear winner scoring 162 points over the three events with her run in the 600m recording 2:06.36. Evie in the end won by 37 points over the 11 other competitors in her age group.

Throughout the event there were a series of good performances which the club can bank on in the future. Further age group winners were Sofia Eben Aimie (under 17 girls) scoring 221 points including 79 for a 13:35 in 100m. 

Among Under 20s, Audry Timothy Ojo won with 224 points, while Jane Small was the senior Women's winner scoring 220 with a 1.45 High Jump. Finally in the under 9 girls event, Calla Norfolk and Hattie Stokes-Wright were tied with 81 points each. 

Declan O'Connell and Xander Hazell had a tight under 9 boys competition with Declan scoring 131 points just one ahead of Xander Hazell.

Perez Morson won the under 11 boys scoring 163 including a 3.60 Long Jump.  

Another good Long Jump of 3.96m saw Edward Hollis winning the under 13 boys age group of 19 competitors – again it was consistency that was the key. Quinn Barker was a surprise winner of the under 17 boys scoring 247 and Josh Strudwick the senior men's competition with 264 points

The dream mile saw 31 runners take part in the three races. The top race saw Peter Watkeys and Cameron Coverney battle it out. Peter Watkeys built up an early lead with Cameron Coveney chasing hard over the last lap, but Watkeys hung on to win with 4:39.28.
