THERE was an increase in the number of people stopped and searched in Basingstoke in the last three months of 2023 'particularly in response to burglary'.

Data recently released by Hampshire Constabulary has revealed that 219 people were stopped and searched in October, November, and December, in comparison to 205 stops in July, August, and September.

The most common reasons for stops were drugs with 156, stolen property at 31, pointed/bladed article at 26, and going equipped - six.

The figures also showed that out of the 219 stops, 13.2 per cent resulted in arrests; above the Hampshire average of 12.6 per cent.

The data also showed the outcomes of the stops, with 137 ending with no further action, 41 with a community resolution, seven with voluntary attendance, three with a summons and two with a caution.

Black people in the borough were 5.6 times more likely to be stopped and searched compared to white people, according to the data, however, the constabulary says 'the overall stops of black people does remain low, with 14 people searched in this period'.

A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary said: "This period saw an increase in the number of stops carried out, particularly in response to burglary. We have also had a focus on tackling drugs networks causing harm in the district.

"The force has a commitment to becoming more open and transparent. Part of this is being better at sharing and engaging on some of the powers that our police officers use to keep people safe, and that includes Stop and Search.

"We believe that greater scrutiny will further ensure that our use of these is right and proper."
