AN abandoned horse was spotted running along a road close to traffic in Basingstoke before being rescued by members of the public.

Basingstoke Cops took to Facebook to share the news about the incident on Sunday, April 21 after it was spotted on Vyne Road and then Morgaston Road in Bramley.

The post reads: "Concerns were heightened as the horse was scared and running closer and closer to the A340 which is a very busy road.

"Response and Patrol Officers arrived quickly and managed to move the horse away from the A340. The horse went into the woodland and back onto the road.

"Some lovely members of the public, who have their own horses came to the rescue. As with most things, food was the answer. A bucket with horse treats inside managed to calm it down . After some brilliant work from the Ladies they managed to get a head collar on it, and a head rope. It took a long time for the Horse to trust the Ladies, however they built a lovely a rapport. This allowed them to lead it into a large horsebox."

Basingstoke Gazette: The horse spotted in Bramley

It continued: "We believe that the owners of this horse have abandoned it because it was a male. They seem to only want females, because they can breed from them. Unless a male (Colt) is a particularly good specimen, they seem to be abandoned .

"I would like to thank all of the Ladies who helped us today. You made this process so much easier. My thanks to the Response and Neighbourhood Officers. This Horse could have caused a serious accident today. However he is now safe and will be well cared for."
