PLANNING permission has been submitted to put up signs outside a new Co-op store in Tadley - but some concerns have been raised. 

As previously reported, the supermarket chain has applied for a new premises licence at the proposed 42-home retirement complex in New Road, Tadley.

McCarthy Stone, the builder behind the retirement complex called Yelland Place, then submitted a second planning application in 2021 for the building after its first submission was rejected by the Basingstoke Deane Borough Council on an issue surrounding affordable housing.

The builder won an appeal against the refusal, paving way Co-op to apply for premise licences in the proposed building.

Now a planning application has been submitted for the signs comprising of two internally illuminated signs and six non-illuminated signs.

The application currently has two letters of objections, with both residents sharing concerns about the signs providing lighting that would be too bright for the area. 

Tadley resident Adeliza Cooper submitted a letter, it reads: "The Co-op sign over the main entrance should not lit up because there is already excessive street lighting there, making it readily visible from anywhere in the vicinity. Neighbours need to be shown due consideration, as so far their needs have been completely ignored. Advertising is showing its ugly face from every direction."

Kimberley Rogers, also objects, her letter states: "Our objection is to the 10 lights that will be on when Co-op is open. Will they be on all night as they have been on before? or on a timer during hours of closure? The lights are too bright and cause light pollution which is also causing light trespass into adjacent and neighbouring properties in the area.

"The council guidance lines have stated, this is not allowed in the standard light pollution guidance. The lights have previously been on, on many occasions and the illumination levels are excessive, for the area which it covers. One would be enough. There is enough light coming from Yelland Place already. If I could attached pictures I would."

A spokesperson for Co-op, added: “We are pleased to have the opportunity to launch a new store to serve and support the community, conveniently, and a planning application is the most democratic of ways for interested parties to express their views.

"Co-op is working to create the range, choice and services to provide a compelling offer locally, and is committed to delivering quality and value for its member-owners and customers.”

The store is expected to open in late May.
