ODIHAM tennis player Ryan Golesworthy was part of Halton Tennis Centre’s 12 and under boys team who have been crowned 2014 National Champions.

The National Tennis Centre at Roehampton played host to the Aegon Team Tennis Premier 12 and under finals in two highly exciting days of tennis.

Teams from Halton, Cambridge, Thongsbridge (Yorkshire) and Shrewsbury were involved in some enthralling tennis matches.

The Halton team was made up of Ryan Golesworthy, Ben Smith, Matthew Blood, Joel Good and Ethan Hague, and they attended the finals with team captain Mark Hunter.

The team had won through to the final with some impressive victories over other clubs during the season to come top of their league.

On day one of the event, number two seeds Halton were up against Thongsbridge and Golesworthy dominated to win his match against Oliver Vesely 4-1, 4-0 to help his team into the final.

The final was always going to be tough, with Halton up against the number one seeds Cambridge. Golesworthy faced Great Britain player Derrick Chen but was undaunted at taking on the higher ranked player. The Odiham player was in superb form and won the match 6-1, 6-3.

Cambridge fought back to level the match at 2-2 and then after the doubles it was 3-3, so the match was decided on a 10-point shoot-out tie break.

Halton’s Blood and Smith rose to the challenge to claim the national title.

Captain Mark Hunter said: “It was a fantastic achievement from all of the players demonstrated great team spirit and determination from the first ball.

“Ryan had a great tournament. At the final he played some inspirational tennis and stepped up to show an extremely high level of fighting spirit, quality and bravery to earn some great results for his team.

Ryan was a pinnacle part of the team's overall success.”

Golesworthy was delighted to be part of the winning team and said: “It was an amazing tournament. We had a great team atmosphere where we supported each other when we needed it. It was the most fun I've had in a team event but we were also taking it very seriously as we were determined to win.”
