BASINGSTOKE Hockey Club’s men’s first team had a busy weekend, recording their first league win of the season, a 6-1 victory over Chichester, but then going down to a narrow 3-2 defeat in the first round of the EH Trophy to visiting holders Guernsey.

Ben Shaughnessey and David Stones both netted twice and Dean Record and Grant Rouse got one each in the league win.

The following day, against Guernsey, Basingstoke started positively, keeping the visitors at bay with good spells of possession until they scored.

The home side hit back and Shaughnessy saw his short corner strike pushed onto the bar by the Guernsey goalkeeper.

Soon after, the hosts won another short corner and this time Jed Mills’ strike deflected into the roof of the net.

After half-time, Basingstoke again came out of the blocks fast, forcing numerous short corners, and Record gave them a 2-1 lead.

This time Guernsey equalised and the visitors scored the winner with only minutes left from a quality drag flick from their final short corner of the game.

Basingstoke pressed for an equaliser, but they could not stop the holders going through.

Despite a much-improved performance, the second string lost 3-0 away at New Forest.

The thirds suffered a 4-1 away defeat at the hands of Havant and Eliot Boyd’s second-half brace could not stop the fourths losing 4-2 against Wimborne.

The fifths lost 5-0 at home to Romsey and the sixths by the same scoreline to visiting Petersfield.

The ladies first team continued their winning run at Guildford with a 2-1 victory.

Fi Parker scored a fine individual goal early on, before Guildford equalised against the run of play.

Basingstoke missed a penalty flick, but some great play between Mel Trevaskis and Kirsty Kent created an opportunity for Rose Evill to produce a top class finish.

The home side then piled on the pressure in the closing stages, but great defending from Cath Mac and Sarah Lucas made sure of the win.

After last week’s loss, the seconds bounce back to winning ways, though they trailed 1-0 at Andover at half-time.

Bex Donaldson levelled things with a reverse stick sweep and Basingstoke continued to press.

With 20 minutes to go, Donaldson converted Sarah Mainprise’s pass for a 2-1 win.

The thirds played out a 1-1 draw with Winchester, while the fourths secured an impressive 1-0 win over Fareham, while the fifths suffered a 5-1 defeat at Yateley.
