BASINGSTOKE’S teenage table tennis star, Amy Blagbrough, finished third in both the singles and doubles of the English National Under-15 Championships at Preston.

The 14-year-old, pictured right, from Kempshott was seeded eighth in the competition but dominated her group, beating Talia Banin-Reid, Alice Hazell and Hannah Ward all 3-0 to easily progress to the knockout stages.

She was given a bye through to the last 16, where she met Buckinghamshire’s Shristi Ghosh and, despite dropping the first set, the Aldworth School pupil stormed back after the early setback to win the next three sets and book a place in the last eight.

She met number four seed, Isabelle Joubeily from Surrey, who had also had dominated all of her matches.

It looked a tough task for the Basingstoke player, but she rose to the occasion with some devastating play to win in straight sets.

The victory saw a showdown with number one seed Denise Payet, but this time Blagbrough was unable to stop the eventual winner and had to settle for third place.

The Basingstoke player then teamed up with Surrey’s Joubeily and together they finished third in the under-15 doubles event.

Blagbrough also played in the under-18 singles tournament, winning her group before going out at the last 16 stage.
