BASINGSTOKE Hockey Club’s ladies avenged an away defeat against Lewes with a 3-2 home success over their Sussex rivals as they finished second in the league, writes Kirsty Novis.

Lisa Scarborough opened the scoring, capitalising on a rebound from a penalty corner, before Fi Parker doubled the advantage.

After the break, Roxy O’Dea scored Basingstoke’s third before Lewes set up a tense finish with a two-goal reply.

A depleted second team enjoyed a 3-0 victory at Haslemere with goals from Catherine Woodliffe, Nicola Burridge and Ruth Crawford.

The fifths won 3-1 away to Portsmouth and Southsea in their final game of the season.

The home side dominated in the first half, but Basingstoke defended well and Michelle Rounding scored from a breakaway.

After the break, the victory was secured by further goals from Saf Whitwham and Rounding.

Hannah Wheeler’s strong game in midfield earned her the most valuable player award.

Basingstoke’s men won 4-3 against visiting Fareham.

The home side took an early lead from Ben Jubin, only for Fareham to equalise.

Basingstoke took a deserved lead late in the first half after Andy Preston slapped a short corner to the far post and Dean Record deflected it home.

In the second half, the home side scored a third, as Jed Mills’ powerful hit into the D saw Record finish with a quality reverse-stick deflection behind his back.

A double save from Smith in the Basingstoke goal kept the score at 3-1, before the visitors pulled a goal back.

The home side restored their two-goal advantage as Mills fired home, only for Fareham to reply with a late breakaway goal.

The seconds continued their run of improved form with a 5-1 victory at Trojans, with goals from Jacques Lourens, Paul Handley, Ian Watson and Clinton Douglass (2).

The fourths secured a 5-4 victory over visiting South-ampton Otters as they came from a goal down to level through captain Eliot Boyd.

After the break, Boyd scored two quick goals, assisted by man-of-the-match Alex Simons, before the Otters pulled a goal back.

Simons and Alex Tatnall made it 5-2, before the home side scored twice more.

Despite an 11-1 defeat away to Hamble Hunters, the fifths put up a good fight in the second-half after being 8-0 down at half-time.
