HOOK and Newnham Basics sit proudly at the top of the Southern League Division One table after making it two wins out of two at the weekend.

Having won by nine wickets on the opening day of the campaign, their first home game was just as easy, even if the end result was only a five-wicket success over Rowledge.

Hook captain Matt Love wants his side to carry on their winning streak when they entertain newly-promoted Calmore Sports on Saturday.

Love said: “We are playing really well as a unit.

“As we are at home again, I hope we can keep our winning run going.”

Last weekend, Calmore enjoyed a three-wicket success against visiting Bournemouth, bouncing back after an awful opening day, when they were shot out for just 61 against New Milton.

Hook look in good form at the moment and their latest success saw them beat visiting Rowledge by five wickets.

Home skipper Love won the toss and decided to bowl, but Rowledge opener Nick Morant (23) looked lively in the opening 10 overs, before he misjudged a ball from Shane Brewer and was clean bowled.

From then on, the top order struggled to get any runs as Brewer and Kieran Thomson kept them tied down.

Wickets soon began to fall and Hook had their visitors reeling at 53-4 and 65-5 .

The star of the visitor’s innings was undoubtedly Ian Metcalfe (46), who shared a sixth-wicket stand worth 52 with Chris Yates (18).

The last four wickets fell to Ben Thane, the medium pacer finishing with figures of 6.1-0-22-4 as Rowledge were bowled out for 148.

At less than three an over, Hook were always going to win unless they lost wickets.

However, they soon had Thane, their top scorer a week earlier, back in the pavilion, the opener flashing at a wide ball and getting caught in the slips.

Fellow opener Thomson proved to be the star of the show as he went on to to make an excellent 68.

He and skipper Love laid the foundations for the innings, with Love’s 41 ball 32 coming to end when he failed to clear the infield.

Thomson and Richard Willcock (15) took up the mantle and 17-year-old Thomson hit two straight sixes in consecutive overs to take the score into three figures.

The departure of Richard Willcock saw his brother Nick (19) replace him and both played some nice shots before getting out to Jake Wish (3-36).

The only sad thing was that Thomson was not there at the end to secure the victory. The teenager was the fifth and final man out with the score on 143, but Matt Buckingham and Ben Allnutt saw their side home.
