Victor Wanyama has not travelled with the Saints squad for their Europa League play-off round second leg tie.
The Kenyan midfielder was taken to hospital for checks after a stomach complaint that was diagnosed as an infection.
Saints will therefore have to battle past Danish champions FC Midtjylland tomorrow night without their engine room powerhouse.
Saints boss Ronald Koeman said: "Victor Wanyama wasn’t travelling with the team because from yesterday on he is ill and the latest update of the doctor this afternoon is that he had a stomach infection."
Sadio Mane was taken off injured against Watford at the weekend, and Koeman is hopeful but not certain he will be fit.
"Sadio we have to wait," he said. "Yesterday he didn’t train. The first part of the session today he will be separate of the group and then we will see if he is available for tomorrow.
"I have a good hope but we have to wait."
