Ronald Koeman has denied reports that Victor Wanyama has asked to leave Saints in this transfer window.

Koeman admitted that he is counting down the hours until Tuesday evening when the window slams shut.

Two of his star players – Wanyama and Sadio Mane – are still being heavily linked with moves away from the club, to Tottenham and Manchester United respectively.

Reports in his native Kenya have suggested that Wanyama has tried to force a move to White Hart Lane by telling Saints he will not play for them until his future is sorted out.

However, Koeman denied any knowledge of that.

“I don't know, I haven't heard that and haven't spoken to Victor,” he said.

Koeman also insisted reports that Wanyama has told Saints he wants to leave are incorrect.

When asked what might happen between now and the end of the transfer window Koeman, who again reiterated that no key players will leave the club, said: “We will get one player in.”

That man is expected to be Celtic defender Virgil van Dijk.

Koeman’s main task for now is to try and get his team over their Europa League exit to FC Midtjylland and ready to take on Norwich tomorrow.

“Yes, if there is one slight positive it is that we will get time to train and time to recover but that is not what we want,” admitted Koeman.

“We had a great season last year to play in Europe and we had a chance with two qualification rounds, we didn't take it.

“Now we have full focus about the Premier League, a difficult start and the start to the season I expect because the team has changed a lot.

“We have new players and the start of the season is completely different, the transfer window is a big influence in the focus of the players and last year we played on three times, Sunday will be our eighth game in August. I will be happy at 6pm on Tuesday – then we know nothing more can happen.”

The international break which comes after the Norwich fixture looks to be timely for Saints as they get a chance to try and get some of their stars fit and back in the side.

“It is not an individual question, we know Sadio is a player who can create something but we miss more players, we miss Wanyama, we miss Bertrand, we miss Fraser and we lost players,” said Koeman.

“That is the case and that is one of the reasons for our difficult start.”
