WITH cold nights, clear water, and high pressure in charge, conditions didn’t bode well for the Barney Barrington Memorial match on the River Thames at Pangbourne.

Unfortunately, that proved to be the case, with anglers finding bites hard to come by throughout the course of the match.

Weights may have been low, but it was great to see anglers of all ages turn out to honour Barney.

To top things off, plenty of money was raised for charity in his name.

Top man Tomasz Wojcik employed feeder and worm tactics for his 17lb 4oz winning bag that included a superb 7lb 9oz tench.

Ian Jones filled second spot with 11lb 6oz of mainly roach, caught using the pole and caster.

Lionel Cook put 7lb 13oz of bits in the sack for third place, employing pole and maggot tactics to get on the rostrum.

Sean Barrington wag and castered it for his 7lb 10oz of roach. Colin Shepherd made up the frame with 7lb 9oz.

Evergreen Pat Hollies won A section with 6lb 6oz. Gary Pook took B section with 6lb 1oz. Mick Stanley’s 4lb 10oz was good enough to take C section. Finally, Simon Couling won D section with 3lb 4oz.

The match was well organised by André Grandjean.

St Michael’s Hospice received in excess of £238 from donations made by the anglers involved.

Thanks to Bato Baits, Thames Valley Angling, Tadley Angling and Thatcham Angling Centre for donating tackle vouchers, which were used as prizes for the winners.

And a big thank you to all of the anglers, some of them not so young, for honouring a truly great fisherman.

Camrose AC were at Old Barlows for their latest match.

Pete Morris won with 23lb 12oz of carp caught using the traditional pole and worm method.

Darren (Dodgy) Brown used pole and paste for his second-placed 9lb 8oz of mixed.

John Timney caught 6lb of mixed for third spot, followed by Pip Seeny on 4lb 9oz.

Twelve fished and caught.

Kevin Smith won the Adventure AS match at Whitehouse Lake.

His haul of 31lb 8oz of carp was caught on the pole using corn to lure in the fish.

Mark Blackmon was next with 26lb 12oz. Again pole and corn was the method employed.

Seven fished and caught.

’Er indoors is taking me to Majorca next week. It’s a hard life.
