BASINGSTOKE Bison double winner Joe Rand has had to step back from playing for the Herd, due to work commitments.

The Canadian signed off his career with the Herd, with one of the winning penalty shots in the Bison's 3-2 win over the visiting Milton Keynes on Saturday.

The forward has been a big part of the club since joining 2012 when he joined from the Wightlink Raiders.

A change in Rand's work circumstances away from ice hockey has put more pressure on his time - meaning he is struggling to commit as much focus as he can to the club.

Following discussions between Rand and the club, it has been agreed that the forward will step back from playing for the Bison, but remain a part of the roster as injury cover.

Bison head coach Doug Sheppard said: "It's a huge blow to lose Joe in such a way, but we cannot stand between him and a fantastic opportunity for his future away from the sport."

"Joe has been as professional as ever during the past few months, trying to make the situation work for the best of both parties.

He added: "I would like to thank Joe for all his efforts for the club during the past three and a bit seasons and wish him all the best for the future."

A new signing for the Herd will be announced on Thursday in the Basingstoke Gazette.
