RENE Jarolin had a superb debut for the Basingstoke Bison as he scored twice and also picked up three assists in the Herd’s 7-2 victory over visiting Hull Pirates.

It took him only 12 seconds to pick up his first point for his new team as man of the match Jarolin’s lovely laid back pass to Joe Greener saw him in turn find Ciaran Long at the back post to score.

Just 12 seconds later, Hull so nearly equalised, but Sam Towner was denied by Tomas Hiadlovsky.

The same Bison line which scored their side’s opening goal, then combined again on their second shift of the game.

Greener was the scorer this time as he tipped in a shot from Declan Balmer.

It was Greener’s 200th league point for the Bison and he became only the 14th player in the club’s history to have reached this landmark.

The home side were in control, but lost their starting goalie Hiadlovsky to injury at 7:12 so British shot stopper Dan Weller-Evans took over and did not disappoint.

Hull pulled themselves back into the contest, thanks to a close range powerplay strike from Dominic Osman, which the Herd goalie had no chance with.

However, the two goal advantage was restored by the first buzzer, after a pass from Joe Baird split the Hull defence and Tomas Karpov fired through the legs of Martins Raitums.

The second session saw Bison captain Aaron Connolly hit the bar early on and then Jarolin opened his account for the Herd at 27:35.

This was followed by some good pressure and Greener’s inch perfect pass from the slot was tapped in by Jarolin.

The same Slovak player scored again two minutes later, as he skated into the Hull end zone and produced a great wrist shot finish through the legs of Raitums.

At this point the visitors called a time-out with the score at 4-1, but after this the home side continued to dominate.

Then as the period came to a close, Jarolin was released by a great pass, but before he could get his shot away he was hooked by James Hutchinson.

Referee Matt Thompson had no hesitation and awarded a penalty shot. The Slovak took it, but was unable to complete a second period hat-trick, as his shot hit the pads of Raitums.

The final 20 minutes, saw the Bison extend their lead further, as Connolly netted at the back post at 47:39 on the powerplay.

Hull replied as their man of the match Pasi Salonen fired into the roof of the net two minutes later.

It has to be said the visitors, unlike some teams in this league maintained their discipline and did not turn nasty even though they would losing by five goals. They continued to play their game, but were unable to beat Weller-Evans for a third time.

The scoring in the match was completed 22.2 seconds from time when Ryan Watt scored close in on the powerplay.

The Bison have no game this evening, but are back in action on Saturday (6.30pm) when the reigning league champions Telford Tigers are the visitors.
