ALDWORTH School became double basketball champions as two of their basketball teams enjoy Hampshire Cup success.

The under-15 team were the first to triumph, as they beat Fareham's Cams Hill School, after both teams came through the qualifying competition unbeaten.

The Aldworth girls dominated the game, scoring freely and led 20-8 at the end of the first quarter.

The game was affectively over by half-time as the Basingstoke team’s girls shut out Cams Hill, as they failed to score, whilst the Aldworth girls' racked up 20 more points.

The third period was even, but Aldworth won the fourth quarter to run out 62-25 winners.

Two days later in a real thriller, Aldworth met their annual rivals, Kings’ School from Winchester in the under-16 competition.

Kings’ School entered the final as favourites having defeated Aldworth in the previous year’s competition. However, Aldworth took an early lead and gradually took control through concentrated defence and effective offence.

The Winchester team found themselves behind by 17-5 at the end of the first quarter.

Kings’ emphasised the comparable strength of the two teams by outscoring the Aldworth girls 15-7 points in the second quarter, which reduced the Basingstoke school’s lead to four points as they led 24-20 points at half time. During the third quarter, Kings, reduced the lead to two at one stage, but Aldworth rallied to go into the last quarter with a five point advantage.

By the sixth minute of the final quarter, Kings’ only trailed by a point, but Aldworth’s defence held firm to prevent Kings’ from scoring during the last four minutes, whilst adding five points themselves as they won 42-36 and were crowned Hampshire champions.
