BUDDING Sports journalists from Fairfields Primary School produced their own back pages and match report from a football match held between the two Year Six classes.

The Gazette’s sports reporter Graham Merry, a former pupil of the school, then had the difficult job of judging the work. He was then invited to handout the prizes for the winners of the best articles, under the heading of angle, headline and layout.

The whole exercise started with the two Year Six classes picking teams to play each other and also two of the pupils were made managers for the day.

The game was then recorded, so the players could watch it back and were able to report on the game.

The match between 6S and 6W proved to be a one sided affair as 6S won 4-1.

Louie Phillips helped himself to a hat-trick and Isabella Martindale grabbed their other goal. Jon Jones scored a consolation strike for the losers.

As well as the goals there was plenty to write about including one of the manager’s picking up two yellow cards and the diving antics of some of the players.

Grace Cox was the overall winner, ahead of Alex Whitechurch and Laynar Purser who won medals.

The best headline was from Samarth Vadiyampeta for his two deck affair which read Forget Hat-trick - It’s a Phillips-trick. 6S Superstar Phillips pilots 6S to another victory.

The best layout award went to Florence Neller and best angle was won by Joe Llewellyn, as he decided to go with the dolphin like diving antics of some of the players.

Fairfields’ Year Six teacher Claire Warwick said: “This is something we do every year and it always proves to be very successful. It gives the chance for the children to write about something different and making it a competition gives them extra incentive.
