BASINGSTOKE Town extended their unbeaten run in the Southern League Premier Division to two games after they drew 1-1 with visiting Hayes and Yeading.

Both the goals came in the first 45 minutes, as Aaron Jarvis gave the Dragons the lead, only for Keir Dickson to level things.

The home side made one change to the side that drew at Stratford on Saturday, with Michael Atkinson replacing the injured Joe Gater, while the visitors included three Dragons from last season, Louie Wells, James Harper and Lloyd Macklin.

Town had the first chance from a Roach corner and then Hayes replied as Jim Fenlon's cross to the far post saw Harry Grant denied by a one handed save and then Macklin hit the post after a mix-up in defence.

The Dragons took the lead on 23 minutes, as a foul on the lively Ashleigh Antwell, saw Roach send in a lovely free-kick from the left, which Jarvis headed in.

Town should have made it 2-0 after 35 minutes, when a ball through to Jarvis saw him beat Wells to the ball at the edge of the area.

He laid the ball back to Michael Atkinson and his cross was met by the head of George Hallahan, who headed wide with the goal at his mercy.

Hayes made the most of the let off and forced a corner at the other end a minute later and Harper, in a rare excursion away from the centre circle, delivered the ball in for Dickson to head home.

After the break, the home side came so close to be awarded a penalty after Artwell was shoulder charged right on the line of the penalty area.

The free-kick saw Roach fire the ball through the wall and Hallahan's effort went wide.

Jarvis, who looks better with every game he plays, forced a great save from Wells just before the hour after he turned in the box and fired at goal.

Hayes were also searching for a winner and Ismael Ehui fired wide and Macklin forced a save from Alex Tokarczyk.

As the game came to a close Town so nearly took all three points, as Matt Partridge fired just wide and then Jarvis fired a shot right across the face of the goal and then produced a stinging shot from 30 yards which went through the hands of Wells and off the top of the crossbar.

Another improved performance and another step closer to their first league win of the season, they will hope this comes on Saturday when Kettering are the visitors.

After the game Town manager Terry Brown said: "I think the turning point of the game was when we missed a gilt edged chance and they scored immediately. We worked hard and it was a good effort, but unfortunately it was not three points."
